open road

Stetson named one of their hats, Open Road. Probably paying homage to the wide open West. Here are some images while fly fishing out on the Open Road… eleven days, three rivers in search of brown trout, a growing pup and a roof top tent on my truck. No Stetson or Cowboy boots. Instead, a ball cap and aging Simms wading boots. All trout caught on foot, with my eyes and on dries…

  1. Whoa! I almost went that way after I left the Fork last Saturday, but I ended up in Craig. Here until Fri, then to the Ranch opener. I’m too set in my ways. Looks like fun in Picabo though!

  2. Jim: Picabo was good. Got there before the big hatch and got one of my finest fish then. Then caught a daytime brief hatch of drakes just before the big night time event started and word got out, and got my second nice fish. Then people arrived and it was a circus. Fish 2 more days but crowded esp at night…people with coolers and chairs, shoulder to shoulder. etc. Not my scene so left but experienced the big bug. Scouted out some great browns in willows during day time but they wouldn’t move. Went back at night to try for them but people casting aimlessly, walking above pools and banks….asking to fish same pool. Got a few fine browns in dillon. Walked down the creek to get to beav.Creek low. Not a lot of bugs when I fished it a week ago( beav) but spotted a few in shallows and they ate a caddis and big ant. Nice water down there. Easy walk wading.should fish better as weather heats up.Flows way too high above barretts. Just got back yestrrday from MO. Fished it for 1.5 days on way home, so you were probably there. Walked tracks up to side channel below big Perkins place. A few snakes on tracks. Fish up, pmds. Both days. Wanted to fish Sterling section, my favorite, but electric fences around and my puppy still too unruley. We’ll, I’ll check you blog out…go luck next several weeks. Enjoy. Thanks for posting.

    • The circus at Picabo has always scared me away from that hatch. Love that place when it’s only mildly busy, or sometimes not even busy at all in the fall. Fished Dillon on Sunday in town, but no bugs. Mo is still fishing when the wind stops, and sometimes even when it doesn’t. It’s busy around here at times now too, but there is ways and places to avoid them. Thanks for the snake warning, saw one on the frontage road side yesterday.

    • Vic: Yes, some nice ones….actually got lucky a few times in spotting fish when there was little bug life. You also did very well on your recent trip when you had the chance to do some angling while vising family/ friends…great fish. I will pop by shop to see how trip went. Thanks for commenting.
